Twisting Science into Magic
In the epic fantasy, Utopia Falling, magic has its foundation in scientific principles, spiced with a touch of mysticism… before being turned on its head.
Everything has to obey the laws of physics, including magic. How then is magic possible? The simple answer is that it’s the tweaks, the words, the hand movements, that extra bit of knowledge defining how one manipulates energy or mass within the laws of physic to achieve an otherwise thought impossible outcome.
The scientific answer, expressed as a mathematical equation—something physicists like to do—might look like this: (E=MC2) + Y = m. In other words, “Y” is the tweak applied to an object or some quantity of energy—as defined by General Relativity—resulting in the otherwise impossible outcome, “m”—what some might call magic.

Many Worlds Theory
At its core, it’s the idea that multiple versions of Earth exist in alternate realities. New realms are created every time a random event occurs, causing the world or the universe to splits along a separate path into one of the alternate options. Who knows, the Many Worlds Interpretation of reality taken to the extreme, could mean the fantasy worlds of Tartica and Evidar just might exist beyond the pages of the writen word.

Astral Projection
Usually occurring in a state of sleep, an Astral Projection is essentially an out-of-body experience where the mind or the spirit leaves the physical body to exist in the Astral Plane. Although rare, it is possible to enter the Astral Plane while awake. Tarticans and Evidarians, just like all of us, live in the physical plane whereas the Astral Plane is a non-physical realm: A natural gateway between two starkly different versions of Earth—perfect for an epic fantasy adventure.

Probability Wave
Image your life, moment by moment, represented by a wave, a bell curve that continually repeats itself and changes shape as you live from second to the next. The probability of what you’ll do next or what you may do in the future, rides along that very same wave projecting an untold number of possibilities into the future. The higher up the peak on that wave, the more probable that’s what you’ll do next, while along the bottom of the curve, the less probable. Remember is school being graded on a curve? Those who scored at the top of the curve did a better job of getting it right. Those scores at the bottom of the curve, got less of it correct. Scientists define a Probability Wave as it applies to quantum physics a bit differently, yet in Utopia Falling, we’ve stretched its meaning a bit.

Double Slit Experiment
While this one is really weird, it’s one hundred percent true. Twentieth century scientists began with two slits set apart from each other. While not watching, they shoot a single photon at one of the slits, but the photon passes through both slits at the same instant—like it exists in two places at once. But, when they do watch, the photon only goes through the one slit like it was supposed to do. The meaning has been debated but some believe the upshot is that all realities exist at the same time only to collapse into one reality when an external force acts on it. The slightest external input, such as a conscious thought, forces all the possible realities to settle on a single outcome. Imagine what magic could do with that concept!

Eye of Heaven
Also know as the Third Eye, it is believed to be located in the brain’s frontal lobe. It is a doorway into enlighten sight, into a higher level of consciousness beyond that which we perceive in the physical world. Accessing the Eye of Heaven, or the Third Eye, requires training and practice. It is not without risk (hint… hint).

Coherence
In term of a scientific explanation, coherence expresses the ability of two waves to interact because their frequency and phase patterns are identical. In other words, coherence exists when the two waves are in sync with each other and can join up into one wave. There exists a more accurate definition that has an exact meaning in physics but Utopia Falling stretches its application in fantastical ways that would otherwise go beyond anything the likes of Eistein would approve. Decohenece exists when two waves are not in sync. Every epic fantasy magic system needs its rules!
“You’re asking me if it’s magic or science? Miss Emosh, it matters not.”
The Devil’s Blacksmith
“Magic is just a word for what people don’t understand or what they think is impossible.” Mera
“I’m a scientist. I deal in physics…in reality. This cannot be. It’s all abracadabra hokum.” Synja Emosh.
